Servagnin

Have you ever heard of Servagnin ?

Have you ever heard of Servagnin ?

If that doesn’t ring a bell, don’t panic! This is a very rare Swiss grape variety…

It was introduced to the Morges region 600 years ago by Marguerite de Bourgogne and was the first Pinot Noir to be grown in Switzerland (making Morges the oldest Pinot Noir vineyard in Switzerland!).

It is also known as Salvagnin, Sauvagnin or Servignier.

It grows well in the canton, yet this grape variety has a reputation for being difficult and temperamental. In the 1960s, winegrowers gradually opted for other varieties such as Pinot Noir or Gamay, almost causing it to disappear.

Using the last two existing vines in St-Prex, the cradle and land of its ancestors, passionate winegrowers in our region have continued to perpetuate this grape variety. They have partially restored the old vineyards and are working to restore the grape variety to its former glory under the name Servagnin de Morges.

To be entitled to the Servagnin de Morges appellation, the vines must be planted with Pinot noir Salvagnin clone and located in the Morges appellation area.
